Australian Masters Road Championships 2010

Southern was well represented at the 2010 Championships at Ballarat, with various degrees of success. Quite a number of our members were competing in their first championships and, as at any national title event, the level of competition was high and gave all riders a yardstick with which to evaluate their performances.

The opening day’s time trial, on a straight out-straight back course, saw Nick Grainger (2nd in M7), Brad Daly (2nd in M6) and Mike Clucas (3rd in M4) all putting in appearances on the podium.  Backing up these outstanding rides were Jodie Batchelor (11th WM3), Catherine McInerney (7th WM4), Ron Jacobsen (8th M7), Mark Gardner (22nd M5), Mario Suban (28th M5) and David Lowrie (30th M4).

No such success next day in the Criteriums, with Jane Hill being our highest finisher with 5th place in WM4.  Catherine McInerney finished 11th in the same race, one place behind Lynette Collins – who is unknown to Southern but we like the name of her club – Skinny Lattes Cycling Club !!

Best of the men’s results was Tony Sullivan with 10th in M7 ahead of Ron Jacobsen in 19th.  Brad Daly and Chris Ellenby were 11th and 22nd respectively in M6. Mark Gardner (23rd M5), Mike Clucas (33rd M4) and Russell O’Toole (22nd M3) completed the Southern results.

Following a rest day for the Herald Sun/Ballarat pre worlds event on the Sunday, it was over to the road races on Monday and Tuesday, where Ron Jacobsen delivered an outstanding result.  Obviously not fancying his chances in a bunch sprint in the M7 category, Ron produced one of his hallmark rides, breaking away on lap one, with only one other rider able to go with him but no match at the finish. Our only gold medal result of the championships.  Tony Sullivan backed up Ron’s ride with a great 8th place in the same race.

Anyone watching Brad Daly in recent weeks knew he had the form and he made it two medals from three rides, taking silver in M6 with Chris Ellenby in 24th.  Mike Clucas (11th M4) and Mark Gardner (34th M5) rounded off the men’s results.

In WM4 Jane Hill equalled her 5th place in the criterium while Catherine McInerney improved up to 8th.

Special thanks to the officials from Cycling Australia, CycleSport Victoria,              City of Ballarat, sponsors, the organizing committee and the volunteers, without whom this event would not have been a showcase for masters cycling in Australia.
